I’ve worn polos my whole life due to school uniforms growing up and then a very strict dress code in high school, but in the past few years have worn them less and less as I’ve gravitated towards button down shirts. Recently I saw a lady walking on the sidewalk in jeans and a polo and it struck me as such a classy, put-together look though it be casual. Later that same day, my friend Ysa told me how the polo shirt is trending for this spring/summer season.
Saying the polo shirt is trendy sounds pretty silly since it’s a classic style, but a quick google search shows that Who What Wear, Harper’s Bazaar, Style Caster, and more are calling for a revival of the shirt. Since we buy timeless pieces and don’t pay much attention to trends, it’s only further affirmation when the fashion world appreciates it. (They say to not pop your collar, but I say it’s a do.)
Few things to keep in mind:
- Stay away from giant logos. If I can see your shirt logo from outer space, then it’s too big.
- Buy the right fit for your body. Many polos come in slim fit or traditional, so find the size that fits you best.
- Use discretion when popping your collar. I love a popped collar when I’m layering, or if it just fits with the style (like the photo below). Just keep in mind you’re walking a line between super cool and looking like a bro. I appreciate a well placed popped collar when I see one though!
So in lieu of reaching for your favorite t-shirt this summer, try a polo instead. It’s a casual style that makes you look refined without even trying very hard. I know I’ll be adding them back into my style more now.
What do you think of polos?
