Pick up any style magazine and you’ll see that gingham is the trend of spring/summer for 2015, but we already knew that because we’ve been wearing it for years and will continue to even long after the fast paced fashion world has moved on. Gingham is a classic print that you’ll see on everything from clothes, to furniture, to textiles, and is a fun pattern to add interest to any wardrobe. Here are my tips on styling below:
A cotton, gingham shirt made it onto my “Four Season Classics” list, meaning this piece is versatile enough to wear year round. It’s lightweight enough for summer, and can easily be layered in the winter. I suggest the classic navy and white small check button down starting out to get the most use as possible.
An over-sized gingham check looks best on larger pieces, such as a dress. Unless the pattern is on a flannel shirt or a piece of outwear, a giant gingham check could look out of proportion on a pair of shorts, cardigan, t-shirt, etc. Otherwise, the over-sized version of the pattern can be quite fun when you keep the rest of the outfit understated.

Lastly, navy and white gingham may be a favorite, but don’t be afraid to add some color gingham into your wardrobe as well. It’s a very preppy look that you’ll reach for all summer. My only tip is to be careful with red gingham as it can easily look like a picnic table cloth, and you could receive unwanted comments about it looking like one.

Guys love gingham too, which is why I had my friend Dave send me over how he styled his gingham shirt for summer. Check out more of his style on his instagram, @dave_money3.
