Fall Staples to Start Looking For Now

At the start of a new season it’s good to reassess your wardrobe and figure out the missing gaps. Missing gaps may be an item that will open the door for new outfit possibilities with what you already have. Instead of buying a ton of brand new clothes, see what pieces would make the biggest difference in working with your existing closet. This will save you time and money in the long run if you build upon a versatile, classic style instead of reinventing yourself every few years.

While we are still in the midst of summer, it’s smart to start keeping an eye out for those missing gap items. Here are some pieces I believe will help make new outfits in your wardrobe if you do not own them already. These are fall staples that you can start looking for now to prepare for the weather change:

fall staplesHats: A baseball cap in a fall color will polish off any casual outfit and help hide bad hair days. A wool wide brim fedora is trending right now for a more indie-americana look that’s lovely in the fall.

Puffer Vest: J. Crew (and J. Crew Factory) have by far the best puffers vests because they are quilted, and fit slim instead of bulky. I got a navy one last year and I wore it often because it was very easy to work into an outfit. This is a great example of a missing gap item if you don’t already own it.

Lightweight Turtle Neck: If you haven’t tried the turtleneck since elementary school, please consider giving it a second chance. They aren’t as confining as they once were, and they’re fantastic for layering under vests, sweaters, and blazers. You’ll reach for it all the time, I promise.

Flannel: Flannels are back once again, so find one that will compliment the rest of your wardrobe to fit in easily into outfits.

Fisherman’s Sweater: Both chunky sweaters and winter whites are trending this year, so why not hit both with a fisherman’s sweater. I got this LL Bean one for Christmas and it’s an item I’ll own for a long time because it’s classic and versatile.

Slim Cords: A great alternative to khaki and jeans, a slim cord will give you a great base for endless fall outfits. I just discovered these highly rated Garnet Hill ones and bought two pair for $18 each.

Bean Boots: If you are considering getting bean boots, do not push buying them off much longer. They sell out very quickly and were back-ordered for months during a nasty winter. LL Bean normally has Labor Day Weekend sales, so plan your purchase then.

Ankle Boots: Ankle booties are back and better than ever. Up your boot game and give these a try. Fringed ankle boots are trending right now (and so cute), but a simple one is also a great choice.

they’re great! I had to exchange them because they ran smaller than I expected, but other than that I loved them. Can’t wait for my new pairs to come!
