Christmas Cards

IMG_7759I’m a big believer in snail mail, and Christmas cards are no exception. I thoroughly enjoy sending and receiving them throughout the month of December. They brighten my day and I hope mine do the same for others.

The act of sending Christmas cards started in England in 1843 by a government worker who was interested in using the Post Office for ordinary people instead of just the rich. Christmas cards later gained in popularity and the tradition is still carried out today.

In 2014, this simple and thoughtful tradition is becoming less popular as social media usage has gone up. Would you rather get a card in the mail or a mass text that says “merry xmas”? The Tiny Prints website puts it best when they say, “A Christmas card should be an act of generosity with a personal touch. If all you have to do is click a link to send a card out, it no longer evokes the feeling of traditional winter cheer.”

Christmas cards are easy to send out and more affordable than ever. Whether you do a photo card, or pick some up at any local store, you can find a variety of options that fit your budget and personality. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when sending cards out:

– Always include a return address. If the letter gets lost somehow, it will be returned to you this way. It’s also a great way to give the recipient your address if they don’t have it already.

– Use your handwriting, even if it’s just for the address on the envelope. You’re already being personable by sending cards in the first place, go the extra mile.

– Don’t forget the older people in your life. Grandparents and other elderly people will greatly appreciate your kind gesture.

– Have fun with it. While this tip is cliche, it’s important that this doesn’t become a mundane task on your to-do list. Get some cute cards and make them your own. These ones from Paper Source are irresistible.

Um, that lipstick looks so good on you! I love the whole outfit. Also, as a Facilities Analyst for USPS, I am so proud of this post. Haha. MAIL THINGS, PEOPLE!

Love this post! Christmas cards are such a special tradition. My favorite part is when people enclose a family photo. It’s amazing to see how every one changes and grows from year to year.

    xo,
