I’m no longer in school, but I’ve always enjoyed shopping for “back to school clothes” and picking out that outfit for the first day of school. Whether you are starting your first day back, or just want to emulate the back to school style, here are my tips for dressing your best on the first day.
I believe your first day of school outfit should set the tone for the year. You’ll want to dress up slightly to avoid looking sloppy, but not too formal to be out of place in a school atmosphere. Since it’s still technically summer, I chose lighter fabrics with colors that transition nicely from summer to fall. Keep the jewelry simple, functional, and classic, and a purse/bag big enough for all the syllabus you’ll receive that day.
A shirt dress is the perfect look for going back to school since it’s a nice balance between dressed up and casual. You’ll show that you care about yourself to put time into your look without going over the top. This shirt dress below is what I would wear for the big “first day of school”.

August 25, 2015 at 2:36 pm (8 years ago)love your tips for school start! I am still looking for a duffle coat, and I see Brooks Brothers have got one for fall/winter 2015. http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Melton-Toggle-Coat/SW00012,nb_NO,pd.html?dwvar_SW00012_Color=GREY&contentpos=89&cgid=0105 What is your opinion about this? I have never ordered anything from this brand, but it looks like good quality 🙂

I always look for toggle coats with rope loops and wood toggles instead of the black plastic toggles. I really do love this, and I think you’d be very happy. Brooks Brothers is synonymous with quality here.

August 26, 2015 at 12:47 pm (8 years ago)Great, then I will probaly order!! 🙂 Thank you so much for your help. I did order the Sperry Topsiders this summer and I love them! I used to buy a lot of “not-very-well-thought-through” shopping before, and I always end up throwing the clothes in the garbage just some months later. But after I start reading your blog I have revolutionized my wardrobe with classic clothes that really last and that I never grow tired of. So good to have “found” the style I like – definitely no more following the last trend which I do not even like (most of time) 🙂
Blessings to you

August 26, 2015 at 3:26 pm (8 years ago)That means the world to me! Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad the sperrys worked out for you, and I’m sure this coat will too. I’m a big fan of the toggle coat myself. 🙂
I agree – I like to buy nicer things and keep them longer. That way I don’t buy a lot of stuff, just what I need and what I will actually wear. 🙂
